Parkhotel Mondschein: palms, creaking floors and the Dolomites beyond the pool
In the centre of Bolzano, we found a hotel with no desire to pretend it is newer than it is. All the better: grand-hotel mornings, cycling by day and Luna by night.

The strongest moment arrives before the suitcase is open. In the middle of town, you walk into a garden where palms sway above the pool and mountains appear beyond them. For a moment, the brain cannot decide whether it is in the Dolomites or somewhere much closer to the sea.
That small geographical confusion is what we love most. Mondschein does not impress with polished marble. It wins through atmosphere and the feeling that you have found a private green world of which busy Bolzano outside knows almost nothing.
Inside the hotel
A little old. And all the better for it.
The floors sometimes creak, the corridors remember another era and the lift… let us say it is not the hotel’s most seductive feature. Mondschein never pretends to be a glossy new showroom, which is precisely why it feels so likeable.
Its slightly Art Deco mood meets beautiful contemporary furniture, calm colours and rooms where every detail has room to breathe. This is not catalogue perfection. It is patina that settles pleasantly into the memory.

Breakfast has the proper grand-hotel mood: you sit a little straighter and stop looking at the time. Luna remains good throughout the day. Honestly, whatever we ordered felt right — ravioli, tiramisù and the yellow drink that became our unofficial full stop.

Beyond the hotel gate
Bolzano is a city to taste, not tick off.
Within minutes you are under the arcades. Begin at the market on Piazza delle Erbe, pass Piazza Walther and then abandon the plan. Bolzano works best in small bites: espresso, a shop window, a church, gelato and a random turn ending among vines.

Our little ritual
Dinner, a walk, gelato. In that order.
Evening gelato tastes better when eaten while walking, with sunset caught between the houses. We found Felicità gelato autentico; choose your flavour at the counter, never at home over a map.
Around Bolzano
Three outings that make sense.
One for views, one for history and one simply on foot into the vineyards. Choose for the weather, never from a need to fit in everything.
Half a day above town
Renon by cable car and train
The cable car climbs from Bolzano to the Renon plateau in roughly twelve minutes. A historic railway, walking routes and Dolomite views await above.
When it rains
Ötzi without the queue
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is in the centre. Booking a time slot is wise, especially in high season; always check current opening days.
No transport needed
St Magdalena and the vines
Walk from the centre through Rencio towards St Magdalena. Town falls below, vines edge the road and the Rosengarten waits in the distance.
Bolzano by bicycle
Do not bring a bicycle merely for decoration.
Bolzano sits at the meeting point of valley cycleways, letting you ride straight from the hotel towards rivers, vineyards and the lake. Mondschein lends city bikes free of charge; e-bikes and Standert road bikes are available for a fee. Numbers are limited, so reserve ahead.

A gentle start
Along the Talvera, Isarco and Adige
The flat network lets you turn back whenever the pool begins to call. It is the perfect first spin after arrival: river, town and no performance.
Our choice
Caldaro and the lake
A signed paved trail follows the former railway from Bolzano to Caldaro: 16.7 kilometres each way and around 198 metres of climbing. Add time for the lake and a long lunch.
A full day
The Alto Ride to Lana
The hotel’s 60.6-kilometre route runs past orchards and vineyards to Lana and back, with roughly 200 metres of climbing — a long pleasure rather than a mountain punishment.

Luna remains our hotel favourite. Keep these addresses for traditional Bolzano cooking, a house-brewed beer or one more gelato.

Our plan
Three days without chasing kilometres.
One day in town, one on the bicycle and one higher up — with a pool, coffee and permission to change the plan in between.
Day 1
The market on Piazza delle Erbe, slow arcades, gelato and an afternoon given entirely to the pool. Luna in the evening.
Day 2
Cycle towards the vineyards and Lake Caldaro. Return for a shower, a lounger, ravioli and a Pornstar Martini.
Day 3
Take the cable car to Renon and continue by historic train across the plateau. If it rains, trade the view for Ötzi.

- Creaking floors, an old lift and no desire to leave the garden. The first two are patina; the third is the real problem.
