Steirereck am Pogusch. Fall asleep among the trees.

A circular window, timber and a different side of Styria. Our stay in a Bert cabin at Pogusch, surrounded by mountain meadows, architecture and good reasons to linger.

Two nights and a full day for the hills

You need to leave the vineyards behind. Pogusch is another chapter: higher hills, mountain meadows and cabins that look as though the forest has been experimenting with architecture. We stayed in one of them, and this change of scale remains a strong memory of the journey.

Our pictures are from September 2021. The estate has since expanded; the restaurant and greenhouse additions completed in 2022 are described from checked sources, separately from what we personally experienced.

A little woodland world with a large round window.

Bert cabins manage to be playful without overwhelming their surroundings. Rounded forms, timber shingles and generous windows: close up you notice the detail, while from farther away the building returns to the trees. For us, the space itself made this a memorable stay.

The four cabins follow a concept by Precht and BaumBau. They are not suspended from living trees; they have their own structure and foundations. Treehouse accommodation describes their woodland setting and character, rather than a literal attachment to a tree.

02 · Steirereck am Pogusch.

Steirereck has its own identity here.

Pogusch combines accommodation, food and farming. Gardens and cultivation form part of its operation, not simply a picture on the wall. When planning another visit, we would choose a particular table first and build the day around it.

PPAG's expansion, completed in 2022, added greenhouses, glazed spaces and further places to eat. Wirtshaus Steirereck am Pogusch holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide. Schankkuchl is a separate open-kitchen concept. The three-star Steirereck im Stadtpark in Vienna is a different restaurant; those stars do not belong to Pogusch.

Wirtshaus: a mountain table

A researched suggestion for a new stay. The restaurant uses regional produce and its own farm. We do not have a documented meal from our visit, so this is not presented as our personal tasting report.

Reserve the table separately and confirm current opening and dietary requirements.

Schankkuchl: closer to the kitchen

For a new experience we would consider its long counter and open preparation over fire or steam. This belongs to the estate's present form, not our September 2021 memories.

Greenhouse cabanas are a different type of accommodation from Bert cabins. Keep the names distinct when booking.

Bründlweg. A good day right from the doorstep.

At Pogusch, we would begin simply: walk out and return to the same base. Bründlweg passes through forest and meadows, by springs and farms offering refreshments. It suits a day without moving the car.

The official tourism portal lists an 11.3 km loop, +426 m ascent and 3½ hours moving time from the Steirereck car park. With stops, make it most of a day. The pictures below show our Pogusch surroundings rather than document every section of this loop.

The whole loop, or just a little

Rated easy by the tourism portal, with woodland and meadow paths. In autumn, wet leaves, mud and daylight matter. Set out in good visibility; choose another programme if there is ice or fresh snow.

For a shorter outing, choose a section from the current map and return the same way. We have not invented a shortcut distance. In persistent rain, choose the castle or time indoors.

Hocheggerhof: a stop along the way

A researched stop roughly halfway around Bründlweg, with homemade bread, soups and cakes. A useful counterpoint to a more formal dinner later.

Pogusch 27. The operator lists Fri–Tue from 10:00, February–December, with breakfast by arrangement. Bring cash and check opening before your walk.

Higher up, or towards water. Let the weather decide.

Our bicycles and mountain views belong to this stay, but an entire region need not fit into one weekend. For another day we suggest two contrasting options. They are separate outings from Pogusch, not stops on Bründlweg.

Aflenzer Bürgeralm

The operator gives around three hours and roughly +310 m for the Endriegel–Schönleitenhaus loop on woodland, meadow and gravel paths. A kilometre distance is not published. The hour-long Gretlhöh’ Skywalk circuit is a shorter option.

The cableway stopped operating in March 2025. The municipality lists access by seasonal toll road, on foot or by bicycle; the road closes with the arrival of winter. Snow, fog or ice call for a different plan.

Grüner See and a gentle walk

A loop from the paid car park in Tragöß: 3.6 km, +38 m and around one hour walking, rated easy. It passes Kreuzteich towards the lake; a shorter alternative is the nearer pond and a return the same way.

Lake levels are lower in autumn: do not expect the summer emerald postcard. Hoamat-Kaffee sits by the first car park; confirm current opening. Take slippery paths slowly, and choose Oberkapfenberg castle's indoor exhibition in persistent rain.

05 · Steirereck am Pogusch.

Come back before the landscape fades.

We would give Pogusch two nights, with a full day outside between arrival and departure. Add another night for Bürgeralm or Grüner See. Fewer journeys are more rewarding than a perfectly packed itinerary.

Our last pictures hold little more than coloured hill silhouettes and an illuminated window. That is how we like to remember a place: as a house we look forward to returning to.

The Dobrý směr verdict

Fall asleep among the trees.

A different landscape and a different kind of house, with the same pleasure in good architecture. We would add Pogusch precisely for that contrast: a mountain chapter after the vineyards.
