PURESLeben Grabenschake. A whole house. Time for friends.
An old farmhouse, contemporary architecture and a pool that is hard to leave. Our stay with friends in South Styria, with vineyards, good tables and room to spend time together.

- Allow
- At least three nights in one place
Some houses make you stop planning. Grabenschake did that for us. We arrived with friends and found something more appealing than a list of hotel services: a space of our own. A generous table, a garden, water and a landscape held in a single view.
Our photographs date from September 2021 and show the house as we experienced it. Practical details were checked again in October 2026. The walks below are editorial suggestions, not a claim that we completed every route.

Timber, stone and a generous helping of quiet.
Grabenschake is more than a villa placed against a pretty backdrop. The old farmhouse and newer glazed wing retain their own character. Outside are timber and meadow; inside, natural materials and a shared space that encourages you to sit down before opening a map.
The combination of architecture and privacy suited us particularly well. Each of our three Styrian stays had a different appeal; here it was the pleasure of sharing a whole house. There is no need to find adjacent hotel loungers or decide where everyone will meet in the evening.

The pool belongs to the house. The day belongs to you.
The long stone wall draws your eye towards the water and then into the greenery. For us, this view captures Grabenschake: the architecture has a distinct voice, while the landscape remains the main event. Staying at home for the day is a perfectly good plan.
The operator currently lists a ten-metre outdoor pool heated year-round and a private panoramic sauna. The two bedrooms are divided between the historic house and the extension: a useful balance between spending time together and having a corner of your own.

Stay in for breakfast. Go out for a good lunch.
A real advantage of the house is that eating need not involve another journey. Under the current terms, breakfast is delivered to the door and included in the stay. Additional food can be ordered in advance, including cold wine-country platters and dishes to heat up. This is a delivery service, not an automatic private-chef arrangement.
When you do go out, let the table be the reason. Lilli & Jojo belongs to the wine-road area farther east; Hiša Denk is across the Slovenian border. We enjoyed both, but would not combine them with a long Oberhaag walk on the same day.

Two days outside. Two different directions.
Our photographs show hills around Oberhaag, evening lanes and bicycle outings. They do not document a published cycling route, so we have not invented a distance or elevation profile. For a specific walking day, we suggest two researched options: one near the house and one around Leutschach.

Altenbachklamm: water, bridges and woodland
A loop from Buschenschank Stelzl vlg. Altenbacher: 4.8 km, around 2½ hours moving time and +320 m in the tourism portal's summary. Moderate, with bridges, ladders and a suspension bridge; return on a quiet road.
Allow half a day with stops. Signed exits offer shorter options; follow the official map. Wet wood and rocks are slippery, so choose the house or a café in rain. Tertinek near the upper exit takes a winter break from 3 November until Easter.

A loop from central Leutschach via Fötschach and Eorykogel: 12.4 km, +340 m and roughly four hours walking. Moderate, mixing forest and vineyard paths with lanes.
With lunch, allow most of the day. The short alternative is the Eorykogel viewpoint alone. Klapothek in the centre offers coffee and homemade cake and closes on Mondays. Keep the café and a prearranged wine visit for a rainy day.

Three nights you do not have to fill.
We would leave the first day to the house: arriving, unpacking and spending the evening together. Use the second for the gorge or the pool, depending on the weather. Only on the third would we head farther into wine country, with one good table booked ahead.
We would not choose Grabenschake for a trip spent away from dawn until night. Its cost makes more sense when you use the privacy, kitchen, garden and water. Keep wine tasting until after cycling, and arrange a lift home from the restaurant.

The Dobrý směr verdict
A whole house. Time for friends.
For us, a house where shared time matters as much as the interior. Friends, water and landscape. A schedule that is allowed to take a break.
