We would start with the evening. After a walk, do you want to head straight into the sauna and sit down to a long dinner, or choose somewhere in town? That answer will help you pick a base more than its star rating. We know Tuxerhof from two stays and describe its family-run service in our personal story. The alternatives below are editorial selections we have not yet visited ourselves.

For couples looking for mountains and downtime, with a real choice between village, town and glacier.

How long to stay
3 nights; add a fourth for a separate day at Schlegeis or on the slopes.
When to go
Late summer and autumn for valley outings; a ski day on Hintertux always depends on live operating conditions.
The trade-off
Schlegeis is not just around the corner from Tuxerhof: the approach is via Mayrhofen and Ginzling. One big outing a day is enough.

The key decision

Where would you like to begin and end the day?

Vorderlanersbach and Lanersbach suit a mountain stay with spa time. Hintertux brings you closer to the glacier, Mayrhofen to cafés and evenings in town. Ramsau sits in the main valley.

A plan with room for a detour

How we would put the stay together.

01

Arrival: settle into the valley

Morning

Avoid tying your journey to a timed ticket. Check in and look at the forecast for the coming days.

Afternoon

Take a short walk near your accommodation. A stretch of the Tuxbach can be a lovely introduction; there is no need to cover the whole route straight away.

Evening

A welcome drink, spa time or dinner. With half board, confirm meal times and exactly which services are included.

02

One big mountain day

Morning

Choose Penkenjoch with the Granatkapelle, or a separate day at Schlegeis. Check whether the lifts or access road are operating.

Afternoon

In good conditions, leave time to linger by the water and enjoy the views. Do not assume Olpererhütte is a lunch stop: its seasonal closure changes the plan.

Evening

Return with time left to unwind. Two major mountain destinations in a single day can easily crowd out everything you came for.

03

The valley or the slopes

Morning

For a gentler day, start in Mayrhofen and choose a stretch of the valley cycle route. The alternative is a full day of skiing on Hintertux, rather than a quick detour.

Afternoon

Kostner offers coffee and baked goods; the dairy in Hollenzen is a separate visitor experience. Plan a morning visit if you want to see production in action.

Evening

Keep your final evening close to your base. An unhurried morning before departure may be more rewarding than another summit to tick off.

When the day changes your plans.

Rainy days and shorter options

Your hotel spa and Mayrhofen. In autumn, the Naturparkhaus in Ginzling has limited weekday hours and is closed at weekends; the glacier is not a reliable bad-weather alternative.

On a first visit

One mountain destination, one valley day and time at the hotel.

On a return visit

Swap the valley day for a full day of skiing, or add another night for Schlegeis.

Practical details before you go

Give Schlegeis a day of its own. In 2026, the operator plans to keep the road open until 26 October; from 13 October it lists hours of 7:00–17:00 and warns of weather-related changes. Olpererhütte is closed, so do not plan it as a lunch stop. An open road does not confirm that mountain paths are passable. For a shorter outing, ride all the way up to Penkenjoch and walk to the Granatkapelle. Do not confuse this with the longer circuit via the middle station and another lift. Finkenberger Almbahnen lists summer operation until 26 October 2026, usually 8:45–16:30; weather may change the plan. Confirm the last return before heading up.
