Austria · Tuxertal · two of our stays
Autumn in Tux. A place we return to.
Mountains in the morning, a pool with a view in the afternoon and a long dinner in the evening. For us, Tuxerhof is above all a hotel where it takes very little time to feel at home.
Come along

- 30 images: our archive and four credited hotel photographs
Some hotels leave us with an address to remember. After our second stay at Tuxerhof, what we brought home was a feeling: being welcome, being looked after, and being able to stop organising everything. After an outing, the only pressing question becomes: pool first, or cake?
Autumn brings lovely contrasts here: green meadows, crisp air and white mountain tops. Then there is warm water on the roof and evening light in the wooden interiors. Our album brings September 2026 together with December 2025. The two visits have different colours, but the same reason to return.
01 · Hotel Alpin Spa Tuxerhof
Arrive. Exhale. Feel looked after.
The welcome sets the tone. A drink on arrival, luggage taken to the room, and the sudden luxury of no longer having to manage your own time off. Someone takes care of things, warmly and without a fuss.
The service is our strongest memory of both stays. The kindness of the team and the friendliness of the owners’ family quickly make the place feel almost like someone’s home. Even the loveliest pool cannot replace that. Here, happily, you get both.
Our September room had wood, a cosy sitting area and a view outside. Tuxerhof offers a range of rooms and suites, so choose the atmosphere, size and orientation that suit your stay. The photographs below show our room; a separately credited hotel image illustrates another option, the Relaxsuite Bergfeuer.

Who we recommend it for
Anyone who wants active mountain days and a hotel worth enjoying without going anywhere at all. A break for two, long breakfasts and enough time to use the spa properly.
Good to know
Tuxerhof also welcomes families. Dedicated spa areas and rooftop pool times make room for quiet time as a couple. Choose the spaces that fit the stay you have in mind.
02 · From breakfast to the last glass
Dinner is a reason to come back.
Breakfast deserves time: fresh ingredients, eggs, fruit, cheeses and regional flavours. Quality and freshness are what we remember most. It is lovely to taste things slowly without thinking about where the next meal will come from.
Afternoon snacks and cakes follow. That part of a stay can quietly make an outing a little shorter. The hotel’s current Verwöhnpension also lists salads, soup and savoury dishes in the afternoon, followed by a five-course menu in the evening. This expanded half-board arrangement gives the day an easy rhythm.
We remember themed kitchen evenings, a steak evening, a dessert buffet and local cheeses. There is something to look forward to, and plenty of reason to linger. The programme changes, so these are memories of our stays rather than a fixed weekly promise.
Then comes the bar: a good drink, an appealing wine list and the option to let the evening continue. When staying in feels this good, another restaurant can wait. Budget for wine and cocktails separately from the included meals.
What the hotel currently includes

03 · Warm water, open horizons
A view you can stay in.
The opening photograph is exactly why we wanted to show you Tuxerhof. Water in front of you, the village below and hills filling the view. Green in September, white during our winter visit. It is an easy place to slow down, even if you normally spend a holiday looking for the next outing.
The spa has a warmer, quieter side too: saunas, rest and sauna rituals. It makes a lovely ending to a day outdoors, or a very good afternoon in its own right. The hotel also offers guided outings. We would look at the weekly programme on arrival and leave the rest of the schedule flexible.

04 · The September mountains
Autumn still has plenty to offer outdoors.
Our photographs show Schlegeis and the September mountains. The other options below are editorial suggestions for planning your own trip. We would pick one main outing to suit the weather and leave time to return.

Schlegeis: a day beside turquoise water
We would allow a generous part of the day for the reservoir. From Tux, head back towards Mayrhofen and continue through Ginzling; the final Schlegeis Alpenstraße is a seasonal toll road. Above it waits water that turns an extraordinary colour in the sunshine, surrounded by mountains. The dam and time by the shore are already worth the journey.
Plan a relaxed reservoir visit separately from a proper mountain hike above it. The well-known Olpererhütte and its photogenic footbridge make a further outing requiring suitable conditions and equipment. In autumn, snow and ice matter as much as the blue sky down in the valley.

Penkenjoch and Granatkapelle
For a shorter outing, take the lifts to Penkenjoch and choose a walk to Granatkapelle. This is different from the longer circuit via the middle station and another lift. Finkenberger Almbahnen list summer operation until 26 October 2026, usually 08:45–16:30, weather permitting. Check the last return before going up.
Penkenjoch routes and operationCycling at your own pace
Our September trip also took us into the hills with helmets on. Ask reception about a suitable mountain route or join the hotel programme. For an easier day, our additional tip is the Zillertal Radweg down in the main valley: an almost level route between Mayrhofen and Strass. Choose a shorter section; the mountain road from Tux is a different proposition.
Zillertal RadwegA simple valley walk
Sometimes a short walk through Tuxertal, a view across the meadows and a return for afternoon cake are enough. For a gentler day, look at valley routes around the Tuxbach. Ask locally for current trail conditions and a suitable starting point.

05 · Our winter chapter
Hintertux: from autumn into white.
Tux has a considerable advantage: when conditions allow, a mountain break can include a day skiing on Hintertux. The glacier extends the season from autumn well into spring. Slopes and views in the morning, then a pool and a good dinner make a persuasive combination for anyone who loves snow.
The photographs in this section are from our December 2025 visit. They show our winter memories, not a promise of the same conditions on every autumn date. Before buying a ski pass, check open lifts and pistes, the wind and the forecast. Bring warm layers and sun protection, and allow enough time to get back.
Non-skiers can consider a scenic lift ride when services allow. Check the appropriate pedestrian ticket and accessible sections first. And if the weather is unhelpful up there, Tuxerhof provides a particularly appealing plan B.

06 · Coffee and a change of scene
If you do feel like going somewhere else…

With meals arranged here, there is no need to fill a restaurant checklist. These two addresses are editorial suggestions for an outing or a change of scene, rather than reviews of our own visits.
Kostner Heimat · Mayrhofen
Kostner in Mayrhofen is on our list for coffee, in-house baking and breakfast away from the hotel. The website lists off-season café hours of Wednesday–Sunday, 07:30–17:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Main-season hours differ. Confirm your particular date before building the day around this stop.
Kostner caféBergfriedalm · Lanersbach
Bergfriedalm in Lanersbach is on our radar for a Tyrolean dinner, timber-panelled rooms and Kaiserschmarrn. There is also a bar and live music, so expect something livelier than a secluded mountain refuge. The website currently lists Monday and Tuesday closures and kitchen hours of 17:00–22:00. Confirm a table and programme before travelling.
Bergfriedalm07 · Your own rhythm
Three nights. Room to take your time.
Our suggested rhythm for your own stay, rather than a literal diary of our visit. Swap outdoor days to suit the weather; include Schlegeis only when the road is open and conditions are suitable.
Arrive and settle in
A welcome drink, the room, a first swim and dinner. We would leave the first afternoon otherwise empty.
The big view
Schlegeis with time beside the reservoir, or Penkenjoch. Choose one direction and leave a margin for getting back to the spa.
Follow your mood
A ride or a walk, or Hintertux when skiing conditions allow. A completely free morning at the hotel is equally valid.
One more slow breakfast
Pack without rushing. Perhaps coffee in Mayrhofen on the way home; arrange any spa use after checkout with reception.

Drawing the map…
The Dobrý směr verdict
We look forward to the mountains. And to coming back down.
We recommend Tuxerhof for the whole experience: the people, the food, the views and the ease of a day spent here. We have arrived twice and felt welcome twice. For us, that is a very good reason to return.
