A restored winegrower's estate in a landscape where you can wake in Germany, lunch in France and return from Switzerland before dinner. Yet our ideal plan is to go nowhere: Petra, the pool, a bottle from La Cave and the vineyards in the final light are quite enough.

Le Rossignol presents travel with a peculiar problem: the surroundings are full of wonderful excursions, but you do not especially want to get up from the pool.
Blansingen is almost dangerously well placed. Basel, Colmar, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Freiburg, the Black Forest and miles of vineyards are all within reach. Yet the moments that return most clearly happened at the house — sunrise over the roofs and the evening bottle chosen from Petra's cellar. That tension makes Le Rossignol special: it is the perfect base for three countries and a place from which there is no need to leave.
An old estate, a new life
A restoration that remembered what the buildings had been.
Petra and Torsten came across the listed estate by chance. More than two centuries old, its collection of house, barn, coach house and winegrowers' cottages had served as a cooperage and distillery — and required a five-year restoration before welcoming guests.
Quarry-stone walls, timber and agricultural tools were not reduced to decoration. They became the foundation for a new layer of oak, steel and exposed concrete. Demolition stone was reused, local craftspeople were involved and each apartment gained a distinct character. Le Rossignol opened in 2023 and received Hugo-Häring architectural recognition that same year.

Our Le Rossignol ritual

La Cave occupies the old cooper's workshop. Petra and Torsten now keep a carefully selected collection of wines from Markgräflerland and neighbouring regions there. It runs on trust: choose a bottle, note it down and decide where to open it. Our answer is easy — beside the nine-metre pool, just as the courtyard falls quiet and its stones still hold the day's warmth.
The house also hosts tastings, long-table dinners and a regular aperitif in the Petit Salon. Dates vary, so ask Petra before arriving.
Petra and Torsten
Hospitality they did not learn at hotel school.
They openly say that hospitality was neither inherited nor professionally trained. They learnt it as guests — through travel and people who showed them what genuine attention can change. One particular chambre d'hôtes in the French Périgord became a lasting inspiration.
You feel it. Petra looks after guests personally, recommends a winemaker, restaurant or cycling route and leaves exactly as much space as you want. A communal kitchen, long table, Petit Salon and fire create chances to meet. Your own apartment or house lets you disappear again.

This is not a conventional hotel lined with identical rooms. Each part of the former working estate has a different plan, material rhythm and relationship with the courtyard.

Do not try to see everything. Le Rossignol works best as a several-day base: one major excursion, one day by bicycle and at least one day deliberately wasted by the pool.

Basel
The old town, Spalentor, a walk beside the Rhine and one major institution: Kunstmuseum, Fondation Beyeler or the Vitra Campus just across the border. Basel is the closest dose of a major city — cultivated without unnecessary noise.
France · an Alsatian postcard
Colmar
Petite Venise, half-timbered houses, the covered market and a pâtisserie difficult to pass. Arrive early, walk without a checklist and sit down for lunch before the largest crowds arrive.
France · cathedral & Petite France
Strasbourg
Further away, but worthy of a full day. The cathedral, water around Petite France, covered bridges and a long pause over food. Strasbourg is not a quick detour — leave after breakfast and give it time.

Mulhouse
Less postcard-perfect and more intriguing for it. Cité de l’Automobile, the railway museum, colourful Place de la Réunion — and a proper pâtisserie stop before driving home.

Freiburg & the Black Forest
Freiburg brings the Münster, old lanes and little Bächle waterways; beyond it, the land rises into the Black Forest. When the valley is hot, climb higher for views, woodland and cooler air.
Beyond the gate · wine & villages
Markgräflerland
The finest excursion may need no car. Paths between vines, small wine villages, views towards the Vosges and a glass of Gutedel — the local Chasselas. This is the landscape that makes sense of Le Rossignol.

A Good Direction by bicycle
The three-border region is best without a windscreen.
Around Blansingen, smooth Rhine-side trails alternate with vineyard hills that can make the legs work. Your bike can be locked and charged at Le Rossignol, and the house can help arrange e-bike hire. An e-bike is ideal if you want to combine vineyards, villages and borders without turning the day into an athletic performance.

The little three-country loop
Kleiner Dreiland-Radweg links Germany, France and Switzerland, passes the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve and climbs only about 180 metres.

The Rhine without big climbs
Choose a section of the Rhine Cycle Route for an easier day. It is clear, largely flat and lets you turn around at exactly the moment the pool begins to call.
No fixed itinerary
Vineyards around Blansingen
Follow local wine lanes, link Blansingen with neighbouring villages and return before sunset. Petra can suggest a route for your fitness, the wind and the winery where you would like to stop.
The taste of Markgräflerland
Gutedel, a long lunch and something sweet for the road.
The region is home to Gutedel, or Chasselas, a light wine as inseparable from its sunny slopes as the vines. Ask Petra for a winemaker, have a simple local lunch and save grander gastronomic ambitions for Basel or Alsace. Le Rossignol occasionally hosts dinners and tastings; sometimes the finest menu is still bread, cheese and a bottle by the pool.

We love Le Rossignol for its position, architecture and every excursion it makes possible. What stays with us is Petra, morning light, vineyards and a bottle from La Cave beside the pool. You can measure the location by the number of countries nearby. Its real value appears when you no longer need to cross any border at all.
