Tuscany can easily become a checklist of postcard views. We prefer one main town each day, leaving the rest of the time to the landscape and the table. This plan builds on our Follonico story with four different editorial accommodation choices. We are not claiming to have stayed in all of them.
For travellers who enjoy architecture, countryside and good food without packing their bags every day.
- How long to stay
- 3 nights in one base.
- When to go
- Our editorial preference is spring or autumn; weather and opening times depend on your dates.
- The trade-off
- Beautiful seclusion and choosing a restaurant on a whim make for different kinds of stay.
The key decision
Where would you like to begin and end the day?
Pienza gives you evenings on foot. A country house brings a garden and tranquillity, but also a journey to dinner. Our firsthand experience of Follonico is told in its own story.
| Place to stay | Who it suits | The main difference |
|---|---|---|
| La Bandita Townhouse | Architecture and walking home after dinner. | A historic townhouse rather than a farm. |
| La Saracina | A slow-paced stay in the countryside. | A different house and different hosts; our impressions of Follonico do not apply here. |
| Hotel Corsignano | A stay with most of the day spent out exploring. | More emphasis on convenience than on a rural retreat. |
| Bonello | Longer stays and setting your own pace. | More independence, with fewer services automatically included. |
Intimate town hotel
La Bandita Townhouse
Twelve rooms in a former convent in the heart of Pienza.

- Its strengths
- An intimate scale and its own restaurant.
- What to bear in mind
- A town setting does not offer rural seclusion.

Practical town hotel
Hotel Corsignano
Close to central Pienza, with parking and breakfast.

A plan with room for a detour
How we would put the stay together.
Pienza and your first evening
MorningArrive and drop off your bags, without the pressure of a morning booking.
AfternoonPiazza Pio II, Palazzo Piccolomini if open, and a short walk along the town walls. A countryside lunch at Podere Il Casale requires a separate journey.
EveningStay in Pienza, or arrange dinner near your country base in advance.
A full day in Montepulciano
MorningStart at San Biagio or in the upper town, depending on your energy. Break up the climb with a coffee stop.
AfternoonPiazza Grande and one booked cellar visit or interior. If you are tasting wine, arrange a driver or transport beforehand.
EveningLa Grotta sits below the town; the walk back up is neither short nor level. Dinner near your base is another option.
Gardens and water
MorningBegin gently in San Quirico and the Horti Leonini gardens.
AfternoonMake a separate journey to Bagno Vignoni. The historic pool is for admiring, not swimming. Book thermal spa access separately.
EveningSpend your last evening without adding another town. If time allows, leave departure until the following morning.
Good places to stop for food.
La Bandita Townhouse Caffè
Dinner is also open to non-residents; book a table.
Details and opening information ↗Podere Il Casale
A farm, cheese and lunch requiring a separate journey.
Details and opening information ↗When the day changes your plans.
Rainy days and shorter options
The palace in Pienza, a booked cellar visit or thermal baths, subject to opening. Do not walk into muddy fields for a photograph.
On a first visit
Pienza, Montepulciano and one slower day are enough.
On a return visit
Swap one town for Monticchiello or spend longer in your own accommodation’s garden.
Practical details before you go
Historic centres have restricted traffic zones (ZTL). Arrange parking and access with your accommodation. A wine tasting and a restaurant table are two separate bookings; private fields are not public viewpoints.
What this guide is based on
The new hotel alternatives come from editorial research. Our own experience is documented in the original stories linked separately. The check date above does not confirm availability for your dates. When we add information, we update the affected sources; the others retain their original check dates.
