Argentario works best when you do not turn it into a race around the coast. One harbour in the morning, a stretch of pine forest and an evening without hunting for parking. Alongside our firsthand experience of Il Pellicano, we add three researched hotel alternatives: four ways to stay, rather than four hotels we have newly visited ourselves.
For couples who want the sea, walks and good food; also for anyone considering a different style of stay from Il Pellicano.
- How long to stay
- 3 nights; for a holiday in its own right, add an unplanned day by the water.
- When to go
- Late spring or early autumn is our editorial preference, not a guarantee of good weather.
- The trade-off
- A sea view in a photograph does not mean a sandy beach outside your room. A cove, a harbour and Feniglia offer different experiences.
The key decision
Where would you like to begin and end the day?
Porto Santo Stefano for harbour evenings, Porto Ercole for the old town and Feniglia, or an inland resort for spa time or golf.
Il Pellicano: our firsthand experience →
| Place to stay | Who it suits | The main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel La Caletta | The sea and harbour evenings within walking distance. | A harbour within walking distance rather than a secluded cove. |
| Hotel Alfiero | Days outdoors and a simple base. | Harbour life and practicality rather than all-day hotel activities. |
| Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort | Relaxing at the hotel and playing golf. | The setting centres on the resort and golf course, rather than a private sea cove. |
Seafront town hotel
Hotel La Caletta
A small cove right in Porto Santo Stefano.
On our radar · not yet visited personally
- Its strengths
- The hotel lists sea views from every room, beach facilities and a restaurant.
- What to bear in mind
- Check the season and whether beach services are included; a town location offers a different level of privacy.
- Price and services
- Check the price for your dates, room and included services. Without a quote, we cannot rank these options by price.
Why consider a similar stay
- Like Il Pellicano, it has an immediate connection to the sea.
- Its own dining facilities.
The key difference: A harbour within walking distance rather than a secluded cove.
Traditional family-run hotel
Hotel Alfiero
A practical family-run base in Porto Santo Stefano.
On our radar · not yet visited personally
- Its strengths
- The harbour centre and air-conditioned rooms, some with balconies.
- What to bear in mind
- Not every room has a balcony or a view. Access involves stairs; this is not a spa resort.
- Price and services
- Check the price for your dates, room and included services. Without a quote, we cannot rank these options by price.
Inland design resort
Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort
Spa and sports facilities in the countryside behind Porto Ercole.
On our radar · not yet visited personally
- Its strengths
- Spa facilities, golf and two distinct dining options.
- What to bear in mind
- It is not directly on the sea; plan transport to the beach and check which services are included.
- Price and services
- Check the price for your dates, room and included services. Without a quote, we cannot rank these options by price.
Why consider a similar stay
- A strong dining offering, like Il Pellicano.
- You can spend a substantial part of your stay relaxing at the hotel.
The key difference: The setting centres on the resort and golf course, rather than a private sea cove.
A plan with room for a detour
How we would put the stay together.
Settle into harbour life
MorningClarify parking and arrival with luggage beforehand.
AfternoonExplore the town where you are staying. In Porto Ercole, climb into the old town; in Porto Santo Stefano, spend your first day by the water.
EveningDinner close to your base. Dama Dama requires a reservation and a plan for getting back.
Feniglia and Porto Ercole
MorningThe beach and pine forest; choose an out-and-back distance that suits you.
AfternoonPorta Senese and Santa Barbara in old Porto Ercole. For a shorter option, choose the waterfront and one viewpoint, depending on your energy.
EveningHead back before the travelling wears you out. Swimming and beach services depend on conditions.
Porto Santo Stefano or more time by the water
MorningThe harbour and Fortezza Spagnola, subject to visiting hours.
AfternoonChoose just one thing: a walk, lunch or a return to your favourite beach. Take a boat only after checking operations and sea conditions.
EveningFinish in the place you enjoyed most. Your last evening does not need another new address.
Good places to stop for food.
Dama Dama
Also welcomes non-residents and works well as a booked evening outing.
Details and opening information ↗Club House Restaurant
Lunch on the same property. From 17 October 2026, the website suspends regular dinner service except for themed events; this is not a second independent location.

Rainy days and shorter options
Fortezza Spagnola, according to its calendar, but access involves steps. In heavy rain, opt for a long lunch and hotel spa time you have actually booked; a boat is not a bad-weather alternative.
On a first visit
One base, Feniglia and both harbours.
On a return visit
Add a free day or a specific official walking route, subject to current access.
Practical details before you go
The fortress lists weekends and public holidays for October opening. Feniglia has both public stretches and serviced beach areas; sunbeds and parking are not automatically included. This plan does not claim to give precise route distances.
What this guide is based on
The new hotel alternatives come from editorial research. Our own experience is documented in the original stories linked separately. The check date above does not confirm availability for your dates. When we add information, we update the affected sources; the others retain their original check dates.
